Introduction:
At the time of first India novel corona
virus case was being
reported from Thrissur on29
th January of 2020 ,there have been throwing caution to the wind among district
authorities .It was intensified on 15 march 2020 as it was second case reported . Then district authorities, as a part of
campaign to mitigate corona virus spread, the collector had consulted several
government departments and civil societies including political parties. Through
which being a civil society organisation in the district the Santhwanam, the
social service centre of Thrissur Archdiocese was invited by district authorities
.
As a part of making sure of a active
participation of all people and organizations in the campaign against Covid 19 paramedic the
Thrissur district collector, Shri S
Shanavas I AS, wanted to take up some responsibilities by the Santhwanam,
in the great mission especially after the declaration of lockdown of 40 days . Thereafter, still today, during the second
wave of COVID 19 in the consultations with him and concerned
authorities, the Santhwanam has been fully participating in the following programs with motto of “Without Distancing from the Social Responsibilities in the Covid 19
Crisis”

Social and
Economical Crisis, Details.
The victims of lock down the small income group
including SHGs members and farmers who are mainly daily earn to meet both ends
of the life. They forced to spend time in home, no chance to get employments,
even their self employments which were sole income sources were blocked. The famers
and laborer were also belonging to the victim group of the COVID19 crisis. The
milk producers lost their way to sell their products, workers find difficulties
to travel employment place and lost daily earnings. Service sector and pity shops
were also closed and left employers and employees in dark to find daily
earnings
Among crisis raised from lockdown related with COVID
19 outbreak, was a huge setback for the migrant workers. There were 10 percent of State population ie about 30 lakh migrant workers now got new
title ‘guest workers’ .They were mainly from state of Tamil Nadu,West Bengal ,
Odisa, Assam, Hindi States .Due to the lockdown, it happened the sudden breakdown in their life .Most of the workers have been
facing hardships and dilemma as if fear
of spreading of sickness in the Kerala State,
they wanted to go home States but no means of transformations . The main hardship happened to them non
availability of jobs too. So they had to confine to Government rules and very
congested shelters even without money and proper food. These migrant groups in
Thrissur districts were about 42 000 as
per labour department and even then the left behind they were a large numbers
without proper documentation and registration.
Recently Santhwanam also came to know transgender
group is mostly marginalized group. Actually they used to move around the town to earn their livelihood
with some music, stage shows etc .However the lockdown affected very much them .In their case social
department of Thrissur unit asked the Santhawanam to render service of Kite of
food for 30 transgender people and 8 HIV +
patients.
1. Procuring the personal protection equipments
material (PPE-), produced and distributed face masks Handing over Mask
stitched by Santhwanam Volunteers at
home and Church to the Thrissur district
collector, Shri S Shanavas I A S , Preparing& Distributing Masks PPE
Kite 5000 and 125,000 face mask.
2. Procuring the sanitizer’s raw materials, producing
sanitizer in collaboration of jubilee medical college and distributing to
common people at free of cost
3. Awareness on COVID 19 virus spread and telephone counseling
with help of telephones and web based communication
4. Free medicine
supply and Medical camp with help of Jubilee Medical camp
6. Promotion of Self Sufficient awareness through
agriculture farming and eco friendly food habits
7. Community kitchen 21 days for 525 three time meals, donated
101 sack rice 20Kg Rs. 37 each
7. Free distribution of food materials and
essentials to Migrant and unorganised workers
8. Training
and facilitating more than 300 thousand volunteers (Santhwanam Tusk Force) to
meet emergency especially funeral service due to Covid
9. Medical Kite including mask, sanitizer, oxi meter vaporizer, oxygen concentrator bottle
10. Buy and Selling
point. Santhwanam SWIFTMART .Platform for famers and SHGs to sell their
products and buying products especially poisonous vegetables in order maintain

As like across the world, Thrissur districts in the middle of the Kerala the families loom large over economic crisis due to the COVID 19 impacts. The financial catastrophe has been indicated in the forms of job and income loss, returning migrants, unemployment and no means to invest. Since, social consequences of this economic catastrophe have been profoundly damaging the social fabric of the community.
In this context as a resilience programme of
families from COVID economic crisis, the Santhwanam -Social Apostolic Wing of
Thrichur Archdiocese is proposing an integrated, sustainable and practical
project called SAFE - SHG Allied Families’
Empowerment with support of Agencies.
